AFC Urgent Care San Diego can perform spirometry testing in compliance with OSHA and the Department of Labor. Spirometry is the most common type of Pulmonary Function Test (PFT). It is used to evaluate worker respiratory health in medical surveillance programs and to screen workers for their ability to perform certain tasks. Spirometry results can play a central role in decisions about worker job assignments and personal protective equipment, and in the assessment of exposure-related health effects.

How does a Spirometer work?

Spirometers are common medical devices and come in all shapes and sizes. They may be plugged into a computer or have their own display screen. However, they will all have a tube attached to the device which is used to breathe into where the rate of inhalation/exhalation, lung capacity and the total amount of exhalation will be measured.

How should I prepare for spirometry testing?

  • Eat light for the day before the test.
  • Avoid exercising for 30 minutes prior
  • Smokers should also avoid smoking for at least four (4) hours prior to the test.
  • Wear loose clothing during the test.
  • Patients on inhaler medications should ask their healthcare provider for specific instructions regarding preparation.

What to expect during the test:

  • You will be sitting upright.
  • A clip may be placed on your nose and you will be given a plastic mouthpiece connected to the spirometry machine.
  • You will place your lips tightly around the mouthpiece and be asked to take in as big and deep a breath as possible and then blow out as hard and fast as you can (maximal effort is very important).
  • The technician may give you a medicine to help open your airways and then repeat the test to see if your breathing improves with the medicine.
  • The Test is often repeated to ensure accuracy
