Nationally, cases are slowing in the Northeast but are skyrocketing in the South
The lastest counts of COVID-19 (via NPR News) indicate that states in the South and nearby regions have a surge of COVID-19 cases and could pose potential risks for travelers to and from these states. Many states in these regions experienced a rise in cases as they began to re-open businesses, restaurants, bars, and recreational facilities in late May/early June 2020. Massive surges in states like Louisiana, Florida, Kansas, and neighboring states are already rolling back re-opening phases for residents.
“It is clear that COVID is alive and well in Louisiana, and as we see more people testing positive and admitted to hospitals, we simply are not ready to move to the next phase, and ease restrictions further as businesses open widely,” Gov. John Bel Edwards [of Louisiana] said on Monday, noting the state had surpassed 3,000 deaths and 50,000 positive tests.

COVID-19 Cases in Pennsylvania Rise above 83,000
The Pennsylvania Department of Public Health announced that COVID-19 cases reached above 83,000 confirmed patients in late June, which continues to show the need for more consistent social distancing and infection control procedures. Governor Wolf stated that the state remains optimistic that re-opening phases will continue as planned, but the current death total of 6,000+ is still enough alarm for patients to maintain effective social distancing efforts.
“As we move closer to having the entire state in the green phase, we must remain committed to protecting against COVID-19,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “Pennsylvania has been a model for the country on how to reopen effectively using a careful, measured approach. However, the virus has not gone away. Each of us has a responsibility to continue to protect ourselves, our loved ones and others by wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing and washing our hands frequently. Together we can protect our most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, our essential workers and our healthcare system.”
