How Can I Reduce My Risk for Skin Cancer?

April 2, 2020

Who is excited about warmer days ahead? We all are! However, with the sunnier days comes a responsibility to make sure we are doing all we can to protect our skin from the sun.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Warringtown wants you to know how to have fun in the sun while also playing it safe when it comes to your skin care! Read on as we share some insight.

Why Is It Important to Get Outside on a Daily Basis?

Who wants to be stuck inside all day, especially on a beautiful, sunny day? No one! Being outside can help to boost your mood, improve your memory, lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of depression.

In addition, the sun infuses us with a dose of vitamin D, which is essential to bone growth, as it helps your body to absorb calcium. Therefore, you want to try to get around 10 to 30 minutes of sunlight most days of the week. Just make sure you’re doing so safely!

Ways to Protect Skin From Sun

● Make sure you are wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

● Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours.

● Wear a broad-brimmed hat to protect your scalp, neck and ears.

● Choose sunglasses that offer UVA/UVB protection.

● Wear light, long-sleeved shirts to help add another layer of protection from the sun.

Am I at Risk for Skin Cancer?

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Approximately one in every five people living in America will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they reach the age of 70.

While anyone can experience skin cancer, there are certain factors that can put you at a higher risk. Fair skin, a history of sunburns, a large number of moles, excessive skin exposure and/or a family history of skin cancer can increase your risk.

Skin Cancer Prevention

● Try to stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.

● When you’re outdoors, seek shade whenever possible.

● Take precautions to avoid sunburns.

● Do not use tanning beds.

● Wear sunscreen daily—even on cloudy days.
