ATHLETE’S FOOT

Athlete’s foot, also known scientifically as tinea pedis, is an infection caused by fungus. It is known to most commonly occur to people who get sweaty, while wearing tight shoes, in other words usually athletes. But, it is known to occur to people who do not engage in sports or other such activities.

What Causes Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is caused by fungi called dermatophytes, which are known generally to thrive in warm, and moist environments. When the skin is infected, it causes mild, yet annoying rashes. Many people who walk barefoot are also affected.

Athlete’s foot is very contagious, and can be spread through:

  • Direct contact: skin-to-skin contact
  • Indirect contact: using contaminated surfaces, clothing etc.

Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of Athlete’s Foot are:

  • Red, peeling, cracking, or flaky skin.
  • May sting, itch, or burn
  • Turn a thick, white-yellow color, and become very hard.

In advanced cases, however, it can cause inflammation, and form blisters and cracks.

Athlete’s foot is contagious and can spread in moist environments, such as showers and pools. Athlete’s foot is known to last for 2 or more weeks, depending on the severity.

How To Prevent Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot can be prevented if:

  • You avoid walking barefoot
  • You have good foot hygiene, like washing your legs.
  • You keep your feet dry!
  • You wear sandals in public showers or swimming pools
  • You change sweating socks and air your feet.
  • Wear shoes made of breathable material.

Treatment

Many over the counter antifungul creams, powders, or sprays help for mild infection. Prescription medication is required for more serious cases.

Some home care recipes to treat the infection and blisters, include:

  • Soaking your feet in diluted vinegar or salt water
  • Massaging with tea tree oil.
