What is EKG or ECG?

Electrocardiogram is also called as EKG or ECG and this is a test that is used by doctors to analyze the heart health by measuring the electrical activity of the heartbeat.  This is a very common test to monitor the hearts status and detect heart problems in most situations.

This is a non-invasive way of testing to help diagnose many heart problems and a painless one. AFC Urgent Care at Warrington carries the EKG equipment and the doctors at AFC urgent care use it to detect

  • Irregularities in the heart that is also called arrhythmias
  • Any blocked or narrowed arteries that may be causing chest pain or a heart attack
  • Detect or monitor how external devices such as pacemakers are functioning.

This test gives two bits of information Firstly if the electrical activity is normal or slow or fast or irregular. Secondly if part of the heart are too large or are overworked.

ECG or EKG can record abnormal heart beats only if it happens during the test. For any abnormality that happens a different monitor may be needed.

ECG is done by attaching multiple (usually 10) sensors (Electrodes) or electrode patches to the skin of chest, arms and legs. Care should be taken to shave chest hair to allow a better connection.

At AFC Urgent Care Warrington our doctors load the EKG patterns to the Electronic Health Records system to compare them to the future results from the same tests. Everyone including the residents of Central Bucks located around Warrington, Warminster, Doylestown, Horsham, Chalfont, and Hatboro can walk-in between 8:00AM – 8:00 PM on Weekdays and 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM on weekends.
