Asthma is a respiratory disease that deals with the inflammation of the airways in the lungs. This causes the airways to become swollen and produce extra mucus. It is a long-term disease that affected mostly children, but adults can have it too.
Causes of Asthma
Some of the most common types of asthma are:
- Allergy-induced asthma: made to happen by airborne substances
- Exercise-induced asthma
- Occupational asthma: inhalation of potentially hazardous substances, gases or dust
Other asthma triggers include cold air, stress, preservatives, certain medications, respiratory infections, and air pollutants.
Symptoms
- Wheezing
- Tightness in the chest area
- Breathing difficulty
- Early morning or nightly coughing.
- Sleeping difficulties
You will know your asthma is getting worse if you need to use your inhaler more often, it is getting harder to breathe day by day, or some symptoms are becoming more frequent.
What Is an Asthma Attack?
An asthma attack is when you feel many of the symptoms. Your airways get smaller and smaller until you find it very difficult to breath. Asthma attacks cause your airways to fill up with mucus. It is caused by being exposed to “asthma triggers.” Triggers vary from person to person.
How To Control Your Asthma
Though asthma cannot be prevented, it is possible to delay asthma attacks by doing the following:
- Make an asthma action plan with your doctor.
- Using inhalers and other quick relief medicines
- Controlling breathing and don’t over exert yourself
- Get vaccinated for respiratory diseases like influenza and pneumonia, to prevent asthma attacks
- Avoid triggers
- Use prescribed medication
When To Contact a Doctor
When you know you have asthma, and experience some of the symptoms worsening, it is best to contact your doctor to get treatment.
