Common Seasonal Injuries During the Fall Season

October 11, 2019

"

Fall is a season that sees higher rates of sports related injuries than almost any other time of year. This can be credited to the fact that football season is in full swing, as well as many other sports that engage children and adults alike. Injury can occur at any age and any experience level, but there are some preventative steps you can take to stay safe!

Common Injuries

Some of the most common sports related injuries in the fall include:

  • Muscle sprains and strains
  • Fractures
  • Concussions

Injuries are more common in contact sports, such as football. A pulled muscle can happen from something as simple as moving too quickly in one direction before the rest of your body is ready to follow. Concussions are caused by a blow to the head or neck that causes the brain to move back and forth within the skull.

Staying Safe

The best way to stay safe while playing fall sports is to use the recommended safety equipment, especially with children. A friendly game of football can quickly turn into a concussion if a helmet isn’t being worn! Avoid muscle sprains and strains by taking time before you play to stretch and warm up your muscles. Playing before your muscles are warmed up greatly increases your risk of injury, some more serious than others. A fracture can’t always be avoided but using the proper safety gear is the best prevention there is. Follow the safety guidelines that apply to your sport including where a player is able to be touched, tackled, or otherwise opposed.

Getting Treatment

If you suspect you or your teammate has suffered a sports related injury, it’s important to seek treatment right way. Prompt treatment could prevent the injury from getting worse or other injuries from occurring. Find the nearest urgent care, stop the game, and go get treated! Urgent care centers are able to offer treatment for sports related injuries without the long wait times you’d find at a traditional emergency room and for a fraction of the cost.
Fall should be a fun time spent with family and friends no matter what sport you choose to play. Remember to play fair, be safe, and don’t try to treat your injuries at home! An urgent care is the best way to get advice on the best method of treatment for your specific injury. If imaging or further treatment is needed, we can even provide you with a referral!
