February has been a cruel month when it comes to blizzards and freezing temps, which is why you need to be aware of frostbite and hypothermia symptoms, and what you can do to prevent these common winter dangers from happening to you!
Hypothermia occurs when the body cannot keep itself warm and its internal temperature falls below 95 degrees. Common symptoms include uncontrolled shivering, poor muscle control, confusion and exhaustion.
Frostbite is most common in external extremities such as your hands, feet, nose and ears. Symptoms of frostbite can include grayish-yellow or white skin, a hard, waxy feel and the area is cold to the touch.
Here are a few tips on how you can prevent frostbite and hypothermia this winter:
• Avoid going outside as much as possible. You are much safer indoors in the warmth of your home!
• If you must go outside, bundle up! Be sure to wear as many layers as possible such as hats, gloves, socks and jackets.
• Stay informed. Check temperatures before going outside and be prepared for dropping temps even if it seems a bit mild out
• If you are planning on shoveling please add hand and foot warmers to your protective gear
