Hypothermia occurs when your body loses heat faster than it produces it. This causes a low body temperature. Normal body temperature is 98.6F (37C). Hypothermia occurs at or below 95F (35C).
When your body has a low temperature, organs and nervous system do not work properly. If untreated, it can lead to further complications.
Symptoms and signs of hypothermia include:
- Shivering
- Lack of coordination
- Slurred speech
- Stumbling
- Confusion
- Poor decision making
- Low energy or drowsy
- Slow loss of consciousness
- Weakened pulse
- Shallow breathing
To treat hypothermia, bring the person into a warm environment gently. Remove any wet clothes and cover person with warm blankets. Have the person drink warm beverages. There can also be medically administered treatment if need be.
