Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

May 4, 2021

Pink Eye is the commonly used term for the highly contagious infection known as Conjunctivitis. Conjunctiva occurs when the conjunctiva, the outermost layer of the eye, becomes infected. This can be caused by a virus, bacteria, or an allergic outbreak. Symptoms of pink eye include red or bloodshot eye, swelling, and watering of the eyes. It may also include a discharge.

For treatment, bacterial conjunctivitis can be treated with an antibiotic. If it is caused by an allergic reaction, antihistamines or allergy eye drops should treat the symptoms. For symptom alleviation, you can apply a cold wet towel to your eyes several times a day. Due to the contagious nature of pink eye, do not share this towel with others.

Best practices to avoid pink eye include not sharing contact lenses as well as removing them before swimming. When swimming, use goggles to prevent bacteria from becoming trapped. If you are around someone who has pink eye, avoid contact, sanitize surfaces, and wash your hand regularly. It is highly contagious.
