Protect Your Skin from Harsh Winter Air

As temperatures drop and the bitter cold of winter sets in you may notice signs of skin damage from the air. Constant exposure to whipping winds and harsh temperatures (bitter cold outdoors and dry heat indoors) can lead to irritated, itchy, flaky, and dry skin. Even worse, irritation can lead to outbreaks of conditions like eczema and cracked winter skin can become infected.

 

Use the following tips to maintain healthy, moisturized skin all winter long.

• Use a Humidifier. Indoor heating systems blast hot air throughout homes and offices creating a cozy environment but harshly dry air. When the air lacks moisture it’s replaced by evaporating water from your skin. Combat this effect by using a humidifier to replace moisture in the air instead.

• Stay Hydrated. Replace moisture lost to dry winter air by applying a rich, thick moisturizer or ointment right after bathing. For overall health, avoid dehydration by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day.

• Ask a Professional. With hundreds of products on the market it can be hard to figure out what’s best for your individual skin type. Seek the advice of an esthetician, dermatologist, or physician who can analyze your condition, suggest products, and prescribe medication if needed.
