8 Top Symptoms of a UTI

May 4, 2021

It is National Kidney Month, so we thought it a good time to explore Urinary Tract Infections, or UTI’s. What is a UTI?  A urinary tract infection is caused by the bacteria usually living in the gastrointestinal tract. In some cases, sexually transmitted bacteria can also cause infection. In men, such infections are often a sign of other problems, such as prostate disease. In order to identify a urinary tract infection, it is important to pay attention to the 8 top symptoms of a UTI.

8 Top Symptoms of a UTI Include:

  • Frequent urination, in small amounts
  • Burning with urination
  • Cloudy, Dark or bloody urine
  • Strong unpleasant urine smell
  • Rectal pain
  • Back Pain
  • Lower abdominal discomfort
  • Fever

Although much more common in women than men, much to popular belief, men usually over the age of 50 are not immune to a UTI. These are the most common symptoms experienced by both men and women with urinary tract infections. However, there are certain symptoms that are specific to each gender.

For Women:

  • Bloating
  • Vaginal Discharge

For Men:

  • Painful Ejaculation
  • Penile, Testicular and abdominal pain
  • Penile Discharge
  • If the infection has moved to the kidneys, pain in a loin above the kidney, fever and or vomiting

If not managed early on, complications often form. Chronic infections may result in urinary strictures, kidney stones, and, rarely, kidney damage or bladder cancer. Rapid advancement of UTIs can lead to dehydration, kidney failure, and death. Pregnant females with untreated UTIs may develop premature delivery and a low birth weight for the child.
