STI Testing: What You Need To Know

May 5, 2021

It is recommended by healthcare professionals that we get tested for STI’s (Sexually Transmitted Infections) when there is any reason to believe we may have caught or transmitted an infection. However, not all of us do it. Why is that? There seem to be a lot of misconceptions about STI Testing, and here at AFC Urgent Care West Hartford, we want to straighten all of that out in hopes that you start taking advantage of confidential STI Testing, and take charge of your sexual health today.

What are some Myths of STI Testing?

  • Some people believe that they only need have an STI testing after a ‘one night stand’ or unprotected sex. Yes, these are two occasions when you should definitely get tested, but the truth is that even in long term relationships if you or your partner have never been tested you run the risk of having an STI. Likewise, using protection unfortunately does not guarantee safety from infection 100% of the time.
  • Some people believe that if they are not experiencing any symptoms, they do not have an STI. The truth is that even though you are not displaying any signs of an STI, it may be bubbling harmfully under the surface waiting to turn into something more serious. It also may be the case that you are a carrier for this infection, and unknowingly, you will transmit it to your partner. Play it safe, and get STI testing.
  • Others believe that STI testing is an embarrassing process where your sexual history and health are put on display. The truth is that many places offer discreet, confidential and prompt STI testing at many convenient locations, including our Urgent Care Centers.

What to expect at an STI Testing Appointment

Getting tested is usually quick and easy. Depending on what you are being tested for, your provider may take a blood sample, a swab, or ask you to pee in a cup. Below is an idea of STI’s that are tested for, and what to expect:sti-testing-confidential

  1. HPV (genital warts)
How the test is done: Visual diagnosis
What you also need to know: Warts can occur in both men and women.
  2. HPV (cervical cancer)
How the test is done: If Pap test result is abnormal, HPV DNA test and a biopsy may be done
What you also need to know: Pap tests detect cervical cell changes, not HPV. An abnormal test is often caused by HPV infection. No test available for men for these types of HPV.
  3. Chlamydia
How the test is done: Swab of genital area or urine sample
What you also need to know: If you have had oral or anal sex, let your healthcare provider know this also. These sites may be infected, but vaginal or urine samples may not be positive.
  4. Gonorrhea
How the test is done: Swab of genital area or urine sample
What you also need to know: Like with gonorrhea, if you have had oral or anal sex, let your healthcare provider know this also. These sites may be infected, but vaginal or urine samples may not be positive
  5. HIV
How the test is done: Blood test or swab from inside of mouth
  6. Genital herpes(without symptoms)
How the test is done: Blood test (drawn from arm or a fingerstick)
What  you also need to know: Be sure to ask for a type-specific IgG test (not an IgM test)
  7. Genital herpes (with symptoms)
How the test is done: Swab of affected area; if at first negative for herpes, follow later with blood test to make sure.
What you also need to know: Must be done as soon as possible; “viral culture” test not as accurate after 48 hours. A negative culture does not mean that you do not have genital herpes.
  8. Syphilis
How the test is done: Blood test, or sample taken from a sore.
What you also need to know: The CDC recommends all pregnant women be tested for syphilis
