What is Mononucleosis?
Mononucleosis (mono) is a contagious infection that causes fever and a sore throat. It usually affects young adults and teens and leaves you alone after a few weeks of rest.
This transmissible disease usually spreads through saliva via personal contact. The most prominent symptoms are fever, itchy throat, and fatigue.
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV): The Main Cause of Mononucleosis
The primary cause of Mononucleosis is Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is a common human virus causing severe fatigue, headache, bad throat, and fever.
While growing up, the majority of us are exposed to EBV at some point. As far as infants and young kids are concerned, their EBV usually has either very mild symptoms or none at all. At the same time, infected young adults and teens can often develop mononucleosis symptoms. Apart from this, people also catch it by sharing food and dishes.
The Stages of Mononucleosis Infection
Mononucleosis infection goes through three different stages:
- The Prodrome Stage - The prodrome stage consists of mild symptoms, like decreased appetite and fatigue.
- The Acute Stage - The acute stage is when classic mono symptoms cultivate, continuing for up to six weeks.
- The Convalescent Stage - The convalescent stage is the recovery or healing phase when most symptoms disappear and may not show up for six months.
It's not necessary for everyone having mono to feel the same symptoms. These symptoms can come and go throughout the illness.
The Symptoms of Mononucleosis Infection
How do you know that you have been infected with Mononucleosis infection? Well, the symptoms show up after one or two months. These are as follows:
- Inflammation of lymph nodes in the neck
- Extreme fatigue
- High fever
- Sore throat
- White patches on tonsils
But a person can also have the following signs of mono:
- Skin rash
- Loss of appetite
- Severe headache
- Pain in muscles
- Loss of energy
- Stomach ache with an abnormally large spleen or liver.
The Diagnosis of Mononucleosis Infection
This illness is often confused with sore throat and flu. However, to confirm that the person is suffering from mono, a thorough medical checkup is recommended. The doctors examine the patients for swollen tonsils, enlarged spleen or liver, or other usual symptoms of the infection.
How Long Does Fatigue from Mono Last?
Generally, it’s common for the mono symptoms to go away within 2 to 4 weeks. But sometimes, the tiredness and weakness can last for months. Yes, you will have to bear it for that long. However, don’t over-exert if you start feeling better. Take it slow in the beginning. You can return to your normal routine after your fever, but you may still feel tired. Listen to your body when it gives you those hints. Take good care of yourself and rest as much as possible so you can return to normal in a few weeks.
