The Return of COVID-19: Navigating Summer in Texas

July 24, 2024

As we embrace the heat and sunshine of another Texan summer, let's remember that we are not yet free from COVID-19. Just when we thought we might be turning a corner, the virus has resurfaced, reminding us that our challenges navigating this virus continue.

The COVID-19 Resurgence

Texas, like many parts of the world, is experiencing a resurgence in COVID-19 cases this summer. Currently, KP.3 is the leading strain nationwide, making up about one-third of cases as of July 20, per the latest CDC data.

KP.3, along with KP.2 and KP.1.1, are part of a family of fast-growing omicron subvariants that have been circulating in the U.S. since the spring. Scientists nicknamed these variants “FLiRT” after the locations of their spike protein mutations, which may make them better at evading prior immunity than previous strains, experts say.

The rapid spreading of the Omicron variant also highlights the importance of testing for COVID-19 when feeling unwell to stop the spread and protect those around you.

Public Health Measures

Public health officials are urging caution in response to the uptick in cases. While statewide mandates have varied, local authorities encourage Texans to consider safety measures such as wearing masks indoors, practicing social distancing, getting vaccinated, and testing for COVID-19 when feeling unwell or showing symptoms. These measures are not just about personal protection but also about safeguarding our communities, especially those more vulnerable to severe illness, such as children, the elderly, and those with preexisting health conditions.

Impact on Daily Life

The return of COVID-19 this summer inevitably impacts our daily lives. Events and gatherings that were cautiously resuming now require reconsideration. Businesses are navigating the balancing act of remaining open while ensuring the safety of their employees and customers. Families are once again evaluating travel plans and summer activities cautiously.

Testing for COVID-19

This summer in Texas, COVID-19 testing remains pivotal in safeguarding communities and individuals against the virus. With the state experiencing varying transmission and vaccination rates, AFC Urgent Care clinics across Texas continue to provide accessible PCR and rapid antigen tests. As Texans gather for summer events, travel, and family gatherings, testing remains instrumental in mitigating the spread of COVID-19, promoting public health, and supporting a safe and enjoyable summer season for all residents and visitors alike.

If you suspect you might have COVID-19, it’s crucial to take action. Visit your nearby AFC Urgent Care for COVID-19 testing and possible treatment. Knowing your status helps prevent the virus from spreading to those at higher risk, similar to how we handle the flu. Stay informed and stay safe!
