How Can I Protect My Skin in the Summer?

April 28, 2021

According to the American Cancer Society, one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70. Since everyone is at risk of skin cancer, it is everyone's responsibility to take care of their skin.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care West Islip wants to offer you tips on how you can take better care of your skin this summer.

Who Is at Risk of Skin Cancer?

While anyone can get skin cancer, there are certain factors that put some people at more of a risk of getting skin cancer in their lifetime.

It's important for those who are at a higher risk to ensure they are taking every precaution to protect their skin year-round.

Skin Cancer Risk Factors

  • Fair skin
  • A history of sunburns
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Living in sunny or high-altitude climates
  • Multiple moles
  • Precancerous skin lesions
  • A family history of skin cancer
  • A personal history of skin cancer

Is There a Safe Way to Tan?

The short answer—no. There is no such thing as a “safe tan.” Whether you get your color from the sun or the tanning bed, you're exposing yourself to harmful UV rays.

Beyond not tanning, there are other steps you can take to protect your skin.

Sun Safety

  • Seek shade whenever possible.
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
  • Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours while outdoors, or more often if swimming or sweating.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses.
  • Stay indoors between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun's rays are most intense.
