Men’s Health Month was created for a reason. Unlike women, who do actually go to the doctor regularly, men have a tendency to avoid their annual checkups, or avoid being seen by a doctor when they have an injury. This is a big mistake because thie habit of skipping a doctor’s appointment can lead to potential health threats as men get older.
Understanding men’s health issues and health risks are really important so that guys can avoid some of the most dangerous health diseases they are prone to, such as heart disease, diabetes, and prostate cancer, to name a few.
In light of Men’s Health month, AFC Urgent Care Worcester wants to help men protect their health with education and preventative care. Men’s Health is important, guys!
Men Are At Risk For These Health Issues
Let’s take a closer look at them:
- Heart disease
- Prostate cancer
- Low Testosterone Levels
- Testicular cancer
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High Cholesterol
Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States. Diabetes is also on the list for top health concerns men should be aware about, and can start at a very early age without any symptoms. Having diabetes also raises your risk for developing other dangerous conditions such as: Heart disease, heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, eye problems. The last thing you want is for diabetes to affect your nervous system, cause organ failures and worse, amputations.
Also we need to look at the dreaded “ Big C”. Cancer is another cause of death in men, specifically, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Both of these are cancers in men that are often diagnosed too late. Just as women perform self checks for breast cancer, men need to perform more self checks for testicular cancer at-home. Did you know testicular cancer is very common in men from ages 15-34? On the other hand, prostate cancer is a serious health threat for older men, especially when they don’t go to the doctor that often.
The point is, there are a lot of health risks men need to watch out for as they age. A routine checkup is the best way to stay on top of your health!
June Is Also Health And Safety Month For The Workplace
According to a 2021 update on workplace injuries, men are more likely than women (60% compared to 40%) to miss work due to a workplace illness and injury. But, why is that? It’s not because men are prone to getting injured, rather it’s the type of job that can put men at a higher risk of injury. Men are more likely to take on higher risk jobs like roofing, logging, construction, and delivery driving that have shown to be dangerous for men.
June is also health and safety month, which means that it’s time for men to consider their health and safety at the workplace. We highly encourage men of all ages to take the extra precautions such as wearing protective gear, equipment and following safety protocols on a jobsite to avoid injury and health risks.
