COVID-19 Rapid Testing in New Britain, CT

AFC Urgent Care New Britain is able to perform COVID-19 rapid swab testing on patients who have been exposed to COVID-19 or are exhibiting symptoms of the virus. Results from rapid diagnostic tests are available same-day.

What Is The Rapid Test And How Should I Prepare For It?

The rapid test is a more efficient method of diagnostic testing for the active COVID-19 virus. Patients visiting AFC Urgent Care New Britain are required to wear a mask for the duration of their visit, only lowering it when asked for the sample collection. The sample needed for COVID-19 rapid testing is collected by taking a swab of the upper nasal cavity. The swab only takes a few moments to complete and is painless to the patient, though some minor discomfort may be felt.

How Does The Rapid Test Detect Covid-19?

After the swab is collected, the sample is brought to our on-site lab for testing. The sample is combined and mixed with a solution that is engineered to only break apart the COVID-19 virus, exposing the genome and genetic material. The genome is then replicated in targeted molecules within your sample, detecting the active virus and providing a result. The result is displayed on the screen and printed. A member of our staff will contact you via a phone call or email with your results.

Why Should I Get The Rapid Test?

After exposure to COVID-19, wait between 5-7 days for rapid testing. This allows for a more accurate result and avoids a false negative. The rapid test gives patients results quicker than standard NAAT/PCR testing, which can take up to three days.

If your test returns with a Positive Result, you should begin self-isolating immediately if you have not done so already. Contact anyone you have been in close contact or proximity with to inform them to get tested. Be prepared to self-isolate for at least two weeks until you are asymptomatic and no longer contagious.

If your test results are Negative For Covid-19, continue following local health and safety guidelines. Maintain a distance of six feet from others who do not live with you, and wear a mask or other protective face covering over your nose and mouth when out in public places.

AFC Urgent Care FAQs

  • Why does AFC provide two different COVID tests?

We offer a rapid test because they provide highly reliable results on the spot; however, they do produce more false negatives than the RT-PCR COVID-19 Test. Doing both tests is our way of ensuring that you get the most accurate results possible without having to put your life on hold.

  • How long does it take to get a COVID test?

We're able to get many patients in and out in a matter of minutes, but the length of time you'll spend in our clinic will depend on wait times that day.

  • How much does it cost to get a COVID test?

That will ultimately depend on your insurance coverage. Presently, many people with insurance are able to get tested at no charge. If you’re uninsured, AFC’s cash pay prices are highly competitive – contact us for the details.
