Amidst the worldwide pandemic, many changes have occurred. It is now required to have regular testing performed for certain professions, as well as when exhibiting any symptoms. Since their introduction, these tests have become a lot more time efficient and accurate, providing patients with quick and precise results.

What to do if you have COVID-19 symptoms?

The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other respiratory illnesses including the common cold and the flu. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough or worsening of chronic cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Loss of sense of smell or taste
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle aches

While less common, symptoms can also include:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Dizziness, confusion
  • Abdominal pain
  • Skin rashes or discoloration of fingers or toes.

Fever: Average normal body temperature taken orally is about 98.6°F, while any temperature higher than this is considered a fever, especially over 100ºF. Infants younger than three months old who have a fever should be assessed by a health care provider.

While children have similar symptoms to adults, they are less likely to have fever, shortness of breath or cough. COVID-19 causes mild illness in the vast majority of cases found in children.

COVID-19 symptoms can range from mild to severe. Some people with COVID-19 have only a mild illness, but then their symptoms may get suddenly worse in a few days.

If you are experiencing symptoms similar to COVID-19, testing is available for anyone with these symptoms, which can be very similar to a cold or influenza. Infants younger than three months of age with a fever or symptoms should be assessed by a health care provider.

There are many self-assessment tools available for anyone that develops symptoms and can be used to help determine if you need testing for COVID-19. Testing is especially important for groups that are more vulnerable to complications from COVID-19, such as seniors or those with pre-existing health conditions, or people who care for these individuals.

Some symptoms can also be signs of other conditions or common illnesses. If you are unsure of your symptoms, contact your health care provider. If someone is having severe chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, feeling confused, having a hard time waking up or losing consciousness, you should seek emergency medical care immediately by going to or contacting your nearest emergency department.

If you develop symptoms, you must self-isolate while waiting for your test results so you do not potentially spread illness to others. Those who are diagnosed with COVID-19 must self-isolate for at least 14 days from when their symptoms started.

Elderly people and those with a weakened immune system or underlying medical conditions are considered at higher risk of severe disease.

How long does it take for symptoms of the coronavirus disease to appear?

The average onset of symptoms from the point of infection is five to six days, although it can take up to 14 days for some individuals.

How are samples tested to detect COVID-19?

A confirmation of infection with the virus causing COVID-19 is done by detecting the presence of viral RNA via molecular testing, such as a polymerase chain reaction test. Other tests test for the antibodies produced by the body, known as antibody tests.

AFC Urgent Care FAQs

  • Why does AFC provide two different COVID tests?

We offer a rapid test because they provide highly reliable results on the spot; however, they do produce more false negatives than the RT-PCR COVID-19 Test. Doing both tests is our way of ensuring that you get the most accurate results possible without having to put your life on hold.

  • How long does it take to get a COVID test?

We're able to get many patients in and out in a matter of minutes, but the length of time you'll spend in our clinic will depend on wait times that day.

  • How much does it cost to get a COVID test?

That will ultimately depend on your insurance coverage. Presently, many people with insurance are able to get tested at no charge. If you’re uninsured, AFC’s cash pay prices are highly competitive – contact us for the details.
