The summer months will be here before you know it, but the impacts of the sun are already here! While it can be nice to enjoy the warm sun on your face while out and about, it is important to protect your skin from the dangers of the sun’s rays.
Your risk of having skin cancer increases with every sunburn that you suffer. This is why a combination of shade, clothing and sunscreen will help protect you.
Our AFC Urgent Care Cleveland team explains how to enjoy the summer sun safely below, so read on.
Why Are the Sun’s Rays Dangerous?
When the sun shines down on your skin, you are being exposed to UV, or ultraviolet, rays. These rays can damage your skin because they damage your cells’ DNA when you are exposed to them. Over time, you can develop skin cancer, experience premature skin aging and develop sun spots on your skin.
One of the best ways to protect your skin is by being diligent about applying sunscreen. Your sunscreen should have an SPF of at least 30, and it should be applied to every bit of exposed skin. It should also be reapplied every at least every two hours, and even more often if you have been swimming or sweating.
Sun-Safe Tips
- Avoid being outside when the sun is the strongest.
- Take frequent breaks in the shade.
- Wear sunglasses and protective clothing.
- Move outdoor activities into a shady spot.
How Else Can I Protect My Skin?
The shade is your friend! Whenever you are outside, try to find a shady spot. The protection of a big tree or an umbrella that you brought with you can be great ways to stay safe from the sun.
You can also use your clothes to your advantage. A broad-brimmed hat is a great choice whenever you are going to be out in the direct sun. It can protect your scalp, ears, neck and face from exposure. Since these areas can be hard to apply sunscreen to, a hat is a good backup. Long sleeves, pants or clothing that offer UV protection are all also great ways to protect your skin.
Signs of Skin Cancer
- A new change to your skin, like a growth or sore
- A changing mole
- Skin itchiness
