Is My Dizziness Related to Vertigo?

Many people put dizziness and vertigo into the same category, but the sensations and reasons for each symptom are different! Dizziness is usually a symptom resulting from your body going through some sort of imbalance, while vertigo is a condition resulting from an inner ear issue that throws off your equilibrium.

Both situations can make daily tasks difficult, so it is important to understand which condition you are suffering from so you can seek the appropriate treatment. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Cleveland can help you figure it all out below.

What Does General Dizziness Feel Like?

When you experience a bout of dizziness, you probably feel like you are continually off-balance. Moving and standing up can make your head feel like it is spinning. It can also be dangerous to move around as your center of balance can feel off.

Dizziness is usually an indication of another issue within your body, and it can typically be remedied with water, rest or eating something.

Common Reasons for Dizziness

  • Dehydration
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Low blood sugar or blood pressure
  • Iron deficiency anemia

How Is Vertigo Different From Dizziness?

Vertigo is also created by another issue within your body. The most common cause for the sensation of vertigo stems from some sort of imbalance inside of your inner ear canal. Conditions like migraines, labyrinthitis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are all issues that can contribute to a case of vertigo.

Vertigo symptoms are usually much more intense than just general dizziness. Vertigo causes your entire surroundings to shift and move before your eyes, and it can feel like your head is swimming or swooping, any time you turn or move direction. It can be debilitating and make daily life impossible. If your symptoms last longer than a few days, come see us to be evaluated.

Symptoms of Vertigo

  • Intense spinning or world shifting sensations
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
  • Motion sickness

If your vertigo becomes severe or is recurrent, you should be evaluated by a medical provider. Drop by AFC Urgent Care Cleveland to be seen quickly!
